Keat’s Ode to Autumn Essay

Analysis Ode to Autumn has a very different theme and style in comparison to many of Keat’s other poems. While most of Keats poems contain sharp cadences and emotionally charged themes, Ode to Autumn is a calm, descriptive poem about Keat’s perspective of the season Autumn and its relation to other season. In the Poem Ode to Autumn, Keats mainly utilizes rustic, vivid, visual and tactile imagery to describe the scenes of Autumn. The varying and slower cadences along with personification develops a more majestic and complacent mood to the description. The first stanza is mainly comprised of an explanation of the fruitfulness of autumn in terms of harvest and the remains of summer’s overflow of warmth. Keats even explicitly states â€Å"mellow fruitfulness† (Keats 44) which can refer to the direct connection of a fruitful harvest of fall crops or be indirectly referring to the happiness of family and life, which is a common theme of fall in that it is the last complete in a year. People â€Å"load and bless† (Keats 44) for survival and support to survive the coming winter; Thanksgiving is also in the fall. As autumn provides great resources to all the people, the people also emulate the same idea. The common idea in this first stanza is the never-ending harvest and life in that autumn â€Å"swell[s] the gourd† (Keats 44) and completely ripens the fruit and is still set for â€Å"budding more† (Keats 44). In the first stanza Keats mainly utilizes flowing imagery with the heartfulness of autumn as a provider for all. By developing a pastoral setting with â€Å"mossed cottage-trees† (Keats 44)and a plethora of fruits and vegetables, Keats further develops a scene of calming harmony between the season and all aspects of nature. Autumn is described as a season wherein the beginning, nothing seems to be ominous of anything but happiness. Since â€Å"summer o’erbrimmed their clammy cells† (Keats 44) Autumn is the perfect season that gets the correct amount of warmth and harvest. The imagery of an overflowing glass of liquid gold (sunlight/summer) also alludes to the golden colors of nature in autumn, with the falling and changing colors of leaves. While summer has the pure sometimes harsh sunlight, in autumn, the warmth is a little subdued by the new coming â€Å"mist† of the cold. The diction of explaining the sun as a volume/ measurable thing allows the reader to feel its abundance. Keats uses classic ideas of food,  warmth and growth, to captivate the reader in a possibly nostalgic or pleasing description. In the second stanza Keats takes a turn in the aspect of autumn that he describes. In the first stanza autumn is described in more of a maternal character, who is all providing and caring for the creatures of the world with warmth, happiness and food. The second stanza describes a possibly younger character, who is more idle. Keats personifies autumn as a majestic woman who is â€Å"sitting careless on a granary floor† (Keats 44). Autumn’s majestic hair is lifted by the â€Å"winnowing wind† (Keats 44). This provides both visual and tactile imagery. It creates a peaceful mood in which everything is carefree. Again the reference to the granary floor alludes to a pastoral setting which adds to the fresh and comforting mood. This stanza with the â€Å"careless† autumn is a sharp contrast to the previous stanza in which autumn is a providing and profitable season. This stanza explains other possible areas to find autumn, or in other words, the second side of a utumn’s personality. The resting and â€Å"sound asleep† (Keats 44) autumn foreshadows the hibernation of many creatures during the winter. It shows the slowing down of activity as the cooler weather starts. This develops a complacent mellow mood. In the second half of this stanza Keats continues the complacent mood by referring to the effect of drugs from the â€Å"fume of poppies†(Keats 44). The hypnotizing effect of the poppies distracts autumn from taking (killing) all the plants as winter arrives. The change that comes with Autumn is gradual with it having â€Å"patient look† as it â€Å"watchest the last oozings† (Keats 44). The interesting diction of the last oozing further develops the slow tone of autumn’s progress. Sometimes autumn is a gleaner who takes all in its path but other times it is slow with its â€Å"laden head† (Keats 44). This may be dependent on the year of autumn. Sometimes it is harsh while other times it is temperate. The use of â€Å"laden head† (Keats 44) creates a heavy feeling that implies the slow progress of autumn. Autumn is just the time between the two major seasons- Summer and Winter- so, it can be described as a long period; its length is relative. In the third stanza Keats develops a more demanding tone by starting out by questioning Spring. This is a slight consolation to Autumn, who may be questioned about its specialty in comparison to the more â€Å"lively† season spring. There is an ode to Autumn but there is no ode to spring, and Keats is praising Autumn by telling it that â€Å"thou hast thy music too†(Keats 44). Again Keats describes autumn as a time of subtle change with the â€Å"soft dying day†(Keats 44). The unique description of clouds blooming the â€Å"soft-dying† days lightens the tone of the stanza. Clouds that bring more darkness are usually associated with gloomy weather and more solemn moods. However, by using a â€Å"spring† term- bloom- to describe the clouds, Keats lightens the mood of the darkening weather, allowing the reader to fell the pleasant nature of autumn. Until the last line of the poem, Keats continues to strongly use visual imagery to describe autumn with its â€Å"rosy hue†(Keats 44). Keats ends by developing a varied scene of several animals making harmonious noises. He shows the slight feeli ng of the onerous winter by the â€Å"wailful choir of the small gnats mourn† (Keats 44) but this is a small portion in comparison to the peaceful, rustic scene of the providing autumn that Keats paints throughout the poem. Each stanza of Ode starts out with a ABAB cadence when it introduces the topic of the stanza and then shifts to a slower arrangement. A combination on this along with Keat’s descriptive imagery creates a complacent and welcoming mood to autumn. Using all this Keats explains the cyclic nature of the season alluding to life and death. All parts of the cycle have an important beautiful part. Keats, John. â€Å"Ode to Autumn.† Lyric Poems. Ed. Book of the Dead

Book of the Dead: The Singer of Amun Nany’s Funerary Procession The Book of the Dead is a textual and visual piece of art that focuses on the funerary aspects of ancient Egypt. One of the parts I liked best in the Book of the Dead at the Metropolitan Museum of Art was the scene of Nany and her passage to the afterlife. I am going to break down this section, and address the different characters and symbols, both formally and contextually. I will describe not just what is seen on the surface, but the underlying meanings behind the Funerary Nany and how it relates to the traditions of ancient Egypt art and life. The Funerary Nany is written/painted on what I assume is a papyrus-like material. It is a light brown color and has a somewhat sandy/rough texture. In this funerary picture, not many colors are used. I’m not sure if colors faded or not, but it seems as if whoever painted it, purposely-used few colors. The primary color shown is green, perhaps to show importance. Iâ €™m assuming this because over the king’s shoulders in the bottom right section is a green garment, so I assume if that is important, all green shown in this picture is important, like the bird in the top register, and the human/animal (? in the bottom, middle register. I believe that figure to be king judging by the conventions of his throne and large hat. He is seated and has a staff, showing authority and power. Also, he appears to be slightly larger than the rest of the people on the bottom register, perhaps a convention to show rule. The only other color in this painting is red, seen on again what I assume is the king’s throne. There are slight shades of darker yellow/brown, but I don’t believe they have much meaning other than to separate people/objects from the background. Papyrus became an essential part of the funerary equipment and every Egyptian who could afford to acquire a copy was buried with it close at hand for use in the afterlife. † T hus, Nany’s Funerary was painted on papyrus. It is also why so many examples have survived and why so much has been learned about the Book of the Dead, which has been called the Bible of Ancient Egypt. The size of this entire piece is quite long. It appears to be about a foot tall but about twenty feet long. It looks like it is telling a story due to the way it is presented. For the entire piece, it alternates from paintings to texts (in probably hieroglyphics). Perhaps the texts describe the paintings presented to the viewer. That would make sense to me, almost like a storybook with pictures in it. And as it turns out, that is exactly what it is. Written on papyri and painted upon coffins in hieroglyphics, it was divided into chapters, each of which had its own title but no specific placement in the book. It was of the Theban Recension, a period in Egypt lasting from the eighteenth to twenty-second dynasty. This period focused around funerary stories. dbghghghh I am assuming that Nany is the woman with the bump in her â€Å"crown† on the top and bottom register. The woman is all the same person due to the way she is dressed and looks. The top register seems of less importance however, due to the scene presented and the size differentiation between the two registers. On the top, it looks as if Nany is walking along and coming across different obstacles or encounters of some kind. From the look of her hand gestures in the paintings it seems as if she is interacting with whatever these encounters are. The bottom register appears to be the last or most important encounter she faces. There is another woman next to her, perhaps an escort to the king. But in the middle is a scale of some type with two figures presented on each side. It is difficult to see what the two images are that are being measured. One side seems to be two people and the other a head. But I’m not quite sure. Or perhaps she is making a sacrifice in front of the king and he is determining whether her sacrifice is a worthy one or not, because all three of the people (including the animal-human creature) are looking at the king and he is looking at them†¦So perhaps there is a dialogue going on in some way. There are texts with each painting in this section, which may be a description of what is going on. It turns out I was somewhat right in my description of the scene and what the hieroglyphics might say. Nany is the woman the whole way through. She is actually making her final journey towards the afterlife. Carol and Faulkner’s book identifies the other characters and symbols and what they represent in Egyptian art and life. Much of the Book of the Dead revolves around Ani (an ancient Egyptian scribe) and his journey to the afterlife. The Ani procession is the largest, â€Å"most perfect,† and the best enlightened of all the papyri containing copies of the Theban Recension of the Book of the Dead. And when reading about it and observing th e paintings, I noticed that much of it is the same, so I was able to compare the two stories. They are both weighing their hearts against the Maat, the goddess of justice and truth. Jackal-headed Anubis, one of the four sons of Horus, and overseer of mummification, adjusts the scales, while a baboon—symbolizing Thoth, the god of wisdom and writing—sits on the balance beam and prepares to write down the result.Nany must pass this test in order to move on to the afterlife. If not, her heart will be eaten. On the bottom register behind Nany is Isis, wife and sister of Osiris. She is identified by the hieroglyphics. These characters are all an important part of the way in which ancient Egyptians viewed death and the afterlife. Sitting right before Osiris is a foreleg of an ox. According to Wilkinson’s book, the foreleg of an Ox is almost invariably included in mortuary offering scenes where it appears in a list of offerings. It is a symbol of royal and divine streng th in Egypt. The way the artist makes these people look doesn’t seem to be as if he was trying to make anyone in the paintings look too idealized. There are no apparent abstractions that throw your focus to any particular piece of the work too strongly. The location of this particular piece of art was a bit secluded. I realized that after we broke off as a group at the Met when I, as well as two of my classmates practically got lost trying to retrace our steps back to the artwork. It was a very dark, empty location of the Ancient Egypt section.I am guessing the darkness intended to put focus on the funerary element of the work, as well as other works around it. Next to the Funerary Nany was the Tomb of Meritamen and Nany’s Funerary Papyri, both of which seem to have correlations with this Nany piece. So it seems that they put related people and objects around each other, to keep everything orderly and relevant in the museum. In conclusion, there are many factors that pl ay into each and every detail put into works of art like this. These details painted a picture for me in my formal analysis of the work and tell a lot about how the piece was made and why.Ancient Egyptians had a meaning for everything they put in the Book of the Dead and all of their art. Each symbol they used had a significant impact on their life and beliefs. In their art, there are connections between many different paintings and texts that relate to each other, and all draw back to a common belief and way of life in Egypt. I am not exactly sure why I chose to analyze The Book of the Dead over the rest of the pieces of art. I think that just when I looked at my options, I felt I had more to say about this piece of work than any of the others.I saw a story in it. I felt I could talk about it clearer and understand it more than the other pieces, and that is what I believe ultimately led to my decision. Sources: Andrews, Carol, and Raymond O. Faulkner. Personality Theory And The Psychological Processes Of...

Abstract Personality theory is a branch of psychology which examines personality as integral to the psychological processes of functioning and psychopathology. There are different areas of personality theory, such as the roots of personality in the individual, and the role of personality in achieving happiness, productivity, etc. The core of all personality research is centered on the question of nature versus nurture. The fundamental question is whether personality is a â€Å"naturally† derived thing hardwired in at birth or as socialized through the â€Å"nurturing† of the parent in youth. Millennials Drive For School Choice - 1894 Words

Millennials’ Drive for School Choice It is notable that the school system has major flaws where variation in methods has caused success and failure to come from different students; this is partially due to the way types of schools function. The flaws in the school system are highlighted in the chapter â€Å"Better Schools: Investing in our future,† from the book, When Millennials Rule: The Reshaping of America, written by David Jack Cahn. They are trying to bring the millennials’ future actions and beliefs to the attention of political campaign organizers. Ethics - the Heart of Leadership

Question: Discuss how you believe the Targets former CEO leader handled the crisis. Answer: Introduction Target is one of the most important retail companies in the United States positioning itself just behind Walmart. The company made its way to the highest earning division in the 1970s. The growth of the company had been immense before the crisis that made the company lose many of its loyal customers. The present report would deal with the crisis that the company had to undergo in the year 2013 leading to considerable decrease in the sales (Target.com, 2016). Gregg Steinhafel, the then CEO of the company could have taken the responsibility to use proper communication strategies to resolve the issues. He could have proved himself as one of the best leaders with the necessary communication strategies and interaction (Avolio Yammarino, 2013). This would have helped the company to retain the face value in the market along with the retention of the loyal customers. Targets former crisis In the history of retail industry there have been several thefts and data breach, which has led to customer dissatisfaction (Walters, 2014). However, with respect to this the one faced by Target Corporation has been most coordinated. The strategies that were opted by the thieves were strong enough to affect 40 million customers of the company. The techniques used called skimming has been of great use to the thieves to hack all the necessary information of the customers. This included their personal information like name, mail id and phone numbers (Target.com, 2016). Owing to the above-mentioned scenario target agreed for a settlement of $39 million with the U.S. banks. Banks lost the trust of the valuable customers because of the data breach where information was collected from the debit and credit cards. The consequence led Target to pay the heavy amount against a class action lawsuit. Targets Communication strategy Targets communication strategy during the data breach has been one of the learning experiences for many of the other retail companies around the world. The organisation did not make use of consoling language that they are with the affected customers (Perlroth Harris, 2014). However, they actually tried to help their visitors with the statement that came from the mouth of a lawyer that ensured the responsibility of the company. Social media is one of the major fronts that have been used by the company to let know the customers and reassure them (IvanauskienÄ— VolungÄ—naitÄ—, 2014). However, one of the issues that could have been dealt by the company includes more interaction that is integrated and steps to curtail the frustration of the customers (Daft, 2014). In case of the issue of shipping debacle of Amazon the organization took the initiative to return the shipping fees to all its customers. Gregg Steinhafel informed the customers of Target regarding the unauthorized incident. However, the message was too sharp to the customers. The company and especially the CEO of the company could have been more apologetic that would have helped the organization to gain the trust of the visitors (Perlroth, 2013). The other issue that has been found in the communication strategy of the company includes the fact that the organization did not take the necessary step to inform the customers immediately. They waited for few days before disclosing the crisis to the customers. Situational Crisis Communication Theory Situational Crisis Communication Theory or SCCT comprises of three core elements. This includes the understanding the crisis situation, effective response strategies that is related to the crisis of the company and finally bridging the gap between the crisis situation and the response (Perlroth Harris, 2014). Target could not understand or deal with the first core element of the theory. The intension of the company was fair however due to poor technological advancement the crisis situation could not be curtailed by the company completely. However, as per the second core element the company agreed to pay the necessary amount to the U.S banks (Hayes, 2014). The response was given by the lawyer and Target took the initiative to interact with its customers. However, in this regard the third core element was not maintained by the company (Ciulla, 2014). Target being one of the best retail stores could not offer the customers compensation or off in their other purchase. The message that w as shared by Gregg Steinhafel was very direct and sharp that could not reach the customers effectively. Gregg Steinhafel being the CEO and the leader of the company cannot establish the interaction and the coordination with the valuable customers. The company due to the release of the formal statements could not effectively use SCCT (Avolio Yammarino, 2013). The company only provided 10 percent reduction on any purchase as an endeavour for the breach. This was negligent in terms of the security of the customers that was at stake. The theory could have been used Target for placing their preventable cluster (Weiss Miller, 2015). This includes dealing with the crisis responsibility and the different attributions. Clusters could have been dealt with responsible interaction and response (Hovav Gray, 2014). Recommendation Enhances and prompt communication- Target lost the opportunity to let know the customers about the crisis when it first broke. In such condition the company turned out to be at fault for not revealing the information to the customers.
